European hiking stick medallions

My father bought these medallions for his hiking stick while in Europe about thirty years ago.  He told me that people often purchase ten or more of the same medallions.  They use one for their hiking stick, put one away for safekeeping, and use the rest for trading, similar to trading cards.  Hiking stick medallions are a rather cheap way for a city or business to use their customers to promote their brand awareness.
