Why you should not use the term “stroads”.

I took this image of Second Street from an enclosed sky bridge, looking west between North Second Avenue East and North Third Avenue East.

While there are plenty of streets for local traffic that also double as highways for city-to-city traffic, no certified traffic engineer uses the term stroads.  For example, the Federal Highway Administration and my state highway administration don’t use the term “stroads”.  Thus, using the term stroads when you should use street or highway will only diminish yourself in their minds.

By the way, as a walker, bicyclist, and transit user, I’ve never had any problems crossing street (local traffic) and highway (through traffic) combinations.  This happens because I walk using the traffic lights, while practicing “defensive walking”.  That is walking by anticipating the actions of drivers on the street or road and never assuming that a driver will slow down and stop, until they do so.
