What got cut from my Duluth News Tribune article about the furry fandom?

I snapped this picture of a delightful fursuit at Excalibur Con 2026. Somehow, I forgot to ask what their fursona's name is.

“Standing tall in your fursuit is an act of defiance against a world that tells you to be small, quiet, and exactly like everyone else.”

What do fans wear at furry conventions and how much does that cost?  Let me count the ways.

1.  You wear your everyday clothing that you already own.  ($0.00)

2.  Fursuit head including hand-carved foam or 3D-printed base, custom eyes, and occasionally a moving jaw. ($900 – $2,800) You wear this with normal street clothes.

3.  Partial Fursuit including the head, hand paws, feet paws, and a tail. ($1,500 – $4,500)  You wear these with normal street clothes.

4.  A complete bodysuit with normal, straight human-like legs. ($3,000 – $6,000)

5.  A complete bodysuit featuring built-in padding to mimic an animal's curved leg structure. ($4,000 – $9,000+)  As my friend told me, you can purchase a car with that kind of cash.

“Art is the heartbeat of our community; without the sketches, the fursuits, and the stories, we would be a gathering of ghosts instead of souls.”

— Author Unknown

Why do furry fans spend time, money, and effort into their hobby?  They are in the fandom to have fun.  Seen in this light, these furry fans are no different from historical reenactment fans, superhero fans, and Japanese animation fans.

“Your fursona is the superhero version of yourself, possessing all the traits you admire and the courage you are still working to find.”

— Author Unknown

When in public, such as going to a convention or attending a furry picnic, furry fans play the roles of both audience and performer.  Unlike other fandoms based on popular culture, the furry fandom is not dependent upon one author or one company to grow and thrive.

“The canvas of the furry fandom is vast, and there is always space for one more color, one more story, and one more dreamer to join the ranks.”

— Author Unknown

In conclusion:  Now is a great time to join this inclusive, entertaining movement of creativity, empathy, and self-expression.
