They are a common sight in construction zones. They keep heavy construction vehicles from
sinking into soft ground, sand, or mud.
Also, they keep pipelines from breaking under the heavy construction vehicles.
These mats appear to have had much use for years.
I’m sure that construction vehicles move these around
the Superior Street construction site as needed.
