Why water & a lightning bolt don’t mix well in a D&D game

In a D&D game that I didn’t play in, but heard about in my University of Minnesota, Duluth gaming club; another party, played by students, was wading through a wide, yet shallow river.  They left their horses, supply wagon, and their hireling teamster behind them on dry land.  The party’s leader (fighter) saw a group of bandits charging at them from the opposite riverbank.  He told their party members to use their ranged attacks.  The clueless wizard, instead of using fireball or magic missile, cast a lightning bolt.

The lightning bolt killed all the low level and low hit point bandits.  But, the lightning bolt also spread across the river, killing half of the party members, and dropping the survivors for most of their health points.  The players who had their characters die because of “friendly fire” dislike the player who played the clueless wizard.
